Ethiopia - Benza, Guji

Nectarines. Black Tea. Brown Sugar.

Ethiopian coffee from a single micro farm is a rarity. This coffee is from the Uraga village in the area of Guji. We are proud to introduce the farmer of this coffee Heleanna Georgalis, a third generation coffee farmer. The micro-climate of this farm is suitable for other native plant families to grow alongside the coffee plant. In this region the farmers produce vegetables along with coffee for their daily usage. One of the plants you can see in Heleanna’s farm is false banana (Ensete Ventricosum), which looks exactly like a banana tree without the hanging fruit. The false banana plant plays a vital role in the Ethiopian kitchen, providing affordable nutrition to the communities surrounding the farms. The long leaves of this tree provide shade for the coffee plants during the hottest part of the day. This gives the trees a longer time to produce their coffee cherries, allowing them to develop more sugars. The result of this unique farming environment produces notes of nectarines, black tea and brown sugar in the cup.
